Join us this August for our very first Great Otter Trot – walk, run or bike 50 miles or your chosen distance and raise money for rescued otters!

We’ve been busy behind the scenes, creating the first Great Otter Trot. We wanted to create an event to raise awareness about otters and other native wildlife, conservation and the natural environment we’re lucky to call home. Combining this with raising money for the vital work we do at UKWOT.

The Great Otter Trot is a nationwide walking challenge running throughout August. Designed to raise vital funds and awareness for otter conservation, the campaign invites individuals, families, and communities to walk 50 miles or their chosen distance over the course of the month.

How to get involved:

  1. Set yourself a goal (50 miles suggested) for August
  2. Plan a route near you and record your mileage
  3. Collect sponsorship money
  4. Get your friends and family involved
  5. Post your progress and tag #TheGreatOtterTrot

How taking part will help otters…

Otter cubs are sometimes tragically separated from their mothers due to habitat loss, flooding, or when adult otters are killed in traffic collisions, a growing threat as roads cut through natural territories. In the wild, otter cubs would normally stay with their mothers for 12 to 14 months, learning essential survival skills before becoming independent. When this bond is broken too soon, the cubs, often just weeks old, are too small and vulnerable to survive alone.

That’s where the UK Wild Otter Trust steps in. Volunteers at the Trust rescue and hand-rear these orphaned cubs, providing round-the-clock care, feeding, and rehabilitation over the course of up to a year, until they are strong, healthy, and fully capable of surviving independently. Once ready, they are carefully released back into safe, wild habitats to live freely, just as nature intended.

Funds raised during The Great Otter Trot will support hands-on otter rehabilitation.
